An opening ceremony was held for Serbia’s Danube Corridor Expressway Project. The event was attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Siniša Mali, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Sofronijević, and Zhang Zhe, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Serbia.
On the day of the ceremony, Vučić took a ride on the Danube Corridor Expressway and spoke highly of the project’s significance for Serbia’s development in his subsequent address. He noted that the Danube Corridor Expressway plays a vital role in safeguarding Serbia’s national interests, boosting domestic tourism and driving economic growth in the country’s eastern regions.
Vučić announced that the expressway would be officially put into operation on the 31st.
Zhang Zhe expressed the belief that the further completion of the Danube Corridor will draw growing numbers of tourists to the scenic eastern part of Serbia. “This bears out a remark we often make: roads connect not only cities to one another, but also the friendship of peoples and opportunities for future development,” Zhang Zhe said.
According to Shandong Hi‑Speed Group, the contractor of the project, the Danube Corridor Expressway is a key branch of Europe’s E75 highway and another landmark project under China‑Serbia cooperation. Stretching 68 kilometers, it features a dual‑four‑lane design with a designed speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The project took five years to complete. During construction, President Vučić paid seven on‑site inspections and hailed the initiative as “the road of the future”.
